The Modern Professional’s Guide To The Briefcase

The briefcase, as traditionally envisioned, that box-shaped
briefcase with a gold key that holds important documents and, most likely, your
sandwiches, feels like it's part of a bygone time. The paperwork itself is
increasingly becoming a part of history, making it almost the kind of executive
job that allows you to move up the corporate ladder. In fact, perhaps the most
famous briefcase is the red briefcase used by ministers, in particular the
chancellor to carry the new budget, more symbolically than in reality, and even
this has been put in the spotlight: retirement in 2010.
Gladstone introduced it, but even in the 19th century,
commentators
suggested that it was more of a stage accessory than an actual accessory,
something to open and close for a theatrical flair. Not a lost idea for
Hollywood, of course: how many times has the reveal of those carefully washed
banknote corners been preceded by the snapping of the briefcase clasps? Also,
its closure suggests closing the doors. It was your chance. You missed out.
These same commentators called the prime minister a "very Pandora's
box" - opening it was something to be very careful about.
Of course, the briefcase finds its heritage in men's bags
in general,
at a time when men carried bags and the "men's
bag" was not so pejorative; It was in medieval times, before the invention
of the pocket, that you needed something to carry your personal effects. Its
most recent ancestry dates back to the 18th century and to the needs of
administrators, whether they are members of an ambassador's staff, hence
case-aggregate, or the legal profession. The clerks asked the saddlers to
present something safe and rigid to wear their underwear, that is, their legal
documents, not their underwear.

But that's precisely the kind of thing one might find in a
job board these days; with increasingly casual outfits, and the breaking of
dress codes in the workplace in particular, and with more active lives in which
work and leisure hours overlap and become confused, the towel, if we can still
call it thus, it had to drastically evolve towards something stronger, more
portable, smoother and more versatile.
That's not to say that the traditional briefcase is not yet
available: the best ones are still made as they were two centuries ago,
stretching and sewing leather over a hinged wooden frame, secured with clip
fasteners and can be a combination lock. In essence, it is built like a small
portable safe.
While this construction is difficult to judge from the
outside, the best classic cases can still be judged by the quality of the
materials. Look for the shine and thickness of the leather; for brass
"hardware" (perhaps with a more minimalist bronze finish); check the
tightness of the hinges and the safe action of the locks; for additional
reinforcement at stress points; and ergonomic interior design. For the latter,
there is no definite good or bad, only what best suits what you need to
transport: check that the different compartments are varied enough for your
specific needs.

In fact, the right briefcases mostly survive as examples of
dying gear (so expect to pay more for it), intended primarily for men of a
certain status, who don't ride a bike, need to bring a change of clothes or
need to be conservative enough. for their work, either in regular board-level
meetings or by sending / saving them from the gallows to court. Look around you
and it's remarkable how few briefcases of the type that would have been common
in the 1950s are in use now, replaced by often still sober but more utilitarian
alternatives that can be worn over the shoulder, face the elements, protect
your content, carry everything you need for the whole day and keep an eye on
the room in any environment.
Again, compartment and capacity issues should be tailored to
the individual, but at the very least, favor padded sections for laptops and
the like that can be easily accessed without opening the main compartment.
Fabric is actually a more practical option than leather.
